What are Cookies?

Cookies are small text strings that a website visited by a user sends to his terminal (usually the web browser), where they are stored before being re-transmitted to the same website the next time he visits. During navigation, the user can also receive cookies on his terminal sent from different web sites or servers ("third parties"), on which various elements may reside (such as, for example, images, maps, sounds, specific links to pages of other domains) present on the website that the user is browsing.

The cookies present in users' browsers are usually numerous, they can persist for a certain period of time and are used for various purposes: log-in, session monitoring, memorization of information on specific configurations relating to users accessing the server.

Cookies differ from each other according to the purposes of those who use them. On this basis, cookies can be divided into two macro-categories: technical cookies and profiling cookies.

Technical cookies

Technical cookies are used for the sole purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary to provide a service requested by a user. They are normally installed by the website publisher or manager.

Profiling cookies

Profiling cookies are designed to create user profiles and are used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user while surfing the net.

Third party cookies

Cookies can be installed on the user's terminal not only by the manager of the website that the user is browsing, but also by managers of other websites who install cookies through the first website (called "third-party cookies").
